Survival is not success
An implant may survive while showing inflammation, bone loss, pain, recession, fracture, or repeated prosthetic repairs. Success definitions may incorporate mobility, symptoms, radiolucency, bone, tissue, prosthetic function, esthetics, and patient satisfaction, but studies use varying criteria.
Find the denominator and unit
Ten failures among 1,000 implants are not equivalent to ten failures among 100. Multiple implants in one patient share risks and are statistically clustered. A study can report implant-level survival, patient-level survival, or restoration survival; each answers a different question.
Follow-up and missing data matter
